A Canadian Family’s Plea to Shri Narendra Modi

We have recently learnt about the draft bill to restrict surrogacy in India only to Indian families and we wanted to share our story, which is similar to thousands of couples that turn for help in India after falling all options available to them at their home countries.

It took us 7 long years to become parents. It was emotional and financial roller coaster here in Canada. After trying everything that was offered to us here in Canada, the doctors were not able to help us or guide us  any further.  After all the time and thousands of dollars spent we were told to keep trying, but to keep in mind that it may never happen. My husband and I were heartbroken.

With some luck we heard on CNN and Oprah Winfrey about surrogacy in India and contacted the Kiran Infertility centre  in Hyderabad. We flew to India to start the process and just over a year later we were blessed with a beautiful and healthy baby girl - our Zoe was born in June 2012. We were and we will be forever grateful for Doctors/Staff/Our Surrogate mother and the general public and Government of India for making our dreams come true. We stayed in India for 6 weeks to complete the post birth process. We met wonderful people who we keep in touch with until now, we met our surrogate and her family and we happy to learn that we changed her life and the life of her family and we felt in love with India.  After coming back to Canada we shared our story with many couples that were struggling to have a baby and many of them decided to travel to India and all of them are blessed with babies by now.  This past January we were blessed with another baby - our son Nolan was born via surrogacy with help of the clinic in hyderabad in January and he is 9 months old.  We were truly happy to go back and travel around India, we met so many wonderful people and also our second surrogate and her family.  We know that the surrogate and her family life has been changed as well.

  surrogacy in India benefits both parties - parents who want nothing else than to have a baby and surrogate mother and her family, as the money received often changes her life. Many parents travel around India, like we did, throughout the process and it also helps the economy.
For many couples like us surrogacy in India was the ONLY option of becoming parents and we will be forever grateful to India and it’s people who came together to help us fill a huge void in our lives. We are proud that our children were born in India,  a country with such rich culture and heritage and one day we will return to show them where they were born. We also will tell them about both of the surrogate mothers that made it possible.

Please do not stop international surrogacy, please note that for many this is ONLY options. I only hope that couples that struggle to have a baby will be as blessed as us through surrogacy in India.

Morepen reports a turnaround performance in second quarter

Net Profit Jumps by 940%, income from operations by 24% and Exports by 52% in Q2 FY 2015-16

New Delhi, November 4, 2015: Morepen Laboratories Ltd. has reported a steep jump of over 940% in its bottom line backed by an impressive all-round improvement in sales revenue of its various divisions in the second quarter (Q2) ended September 30, 2015.

Morepen’s profit after tax (PAT) in Q2 of financial Year 2015-16 stood at Rs.3.22 crore up from Rs. 31 lakhs in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year, registering a growth of 940%. The company’s net income from operations rose by 24 per cent in Q2 at Rs. 113.00 crore from Rs.91.18 crore and EBIDTA grew by 55% at Rs. 16.06 crore from Rs. 10.35 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal. The cash surplus (EBDA) has also shown a significant rise of 49% at Rs. 12.74 crore (Rs.8.52 Crore).

Speaking on the spectacular turnaround reported by the company in the second quarter, Mr. Sushil Suri, Chairman & Managing Director, Morepen Laboratories Ltd, said, “Morepen has a niche in the API business. Our cost reduction efforts coupled with continuous investments in R&D yielded rich dividends for the company as it attained a strong hold in the international markets, which eventually reflected positively on financial front in the current fiscal.”

A major portion of the growth in Q2 has come from exports business at Rs. 51.55 crore (Rs. 33.92 crore), an increase of 52%. Amongst various business segments, the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API)/ Bulk Drugs segment’s contribution in total sales continued to remain at the top with a revenue of Rs. 69.52 crore in Q2 Fy 2015-16, up by 37 per cent from Rs. 50.59 crore in corresponding quarter of the previous FY. Within the bulk drug’s segment, Atorvastatin’s business stood at Rs. 11.31 crore and Loratadine at Rs. 29.46 crore, registering a growth of 79% and 37% respectively.

The Home Diagnostics business with a sales revenue of Rs. 16.08 crore in Q2 FY 2015-16 (Rs. 13.75 crore) is another big contributor to the upsurge in the overall performance. Blood Glucometers and BP Monitors, used for measuring blood sugar and blood pressure in human body, are the main force driving Home Diagnostics sales of the company in the current fiscal. These high-end devices alone have recorded a sales revenue of Rs. 10.93  Crore in Q2 FY 2015-16. The company’s brands “Gluco One” and “BP One” are amongst the top three brands of the country in their respective categories. The company has high hopes from these business segments in the coming years, given the fact that India is increasingly being considered as the diabetic and cardiac capital of the world.

In the half year ended September 30, 2015, Morepen Laboratories has recorded a net profit of Rs. 5.73 crore and an income from operation of Rs. 216.56 crore, registering a growth of 328% and 19% respectively. EBIDTA during first half rose by 21% at Rs.29.52 crore, cash surplus (EBDA) by 17% at Rs. 24.54 crore, Exports by 28% at Rs. 97.07 crore, Home Diagnostics business by 23% at Rs.30.70 crore and API business by 24 % at Rs. 129.91 crore. The sales revenue of Gluco Monitors and Blood Pressure Monitors in the first half has increased to Rs. 20.35 crore as compared to Rs. 14.23 crore in the first half of previous fiscal.

Modi's claim of being a 'chaiwala' may be a stretch: Social Activist

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's own  Railway Ministry has denied that they have any information about Modi ji selling tea on any platform or on any train in RTI reply

New Delhi, 22nd February 2015 : There is no record available that shows  Prime Minister Narendra Modi was selling tea on railway platforms or trains in his childhood, claims social activist and congress supporter Tehseen Poonawalla on the basis of a RTI reply by the Modi government's  own Railway Ministry.

Mr. Tehseen Poonawalla, a leading entrepreneur and a very vocal congress supporter had filed an RTI application with the Railway Board to inquire about any record, registration number or official pass that was issued to Shri Narendra Modi allowing/entitling him to sell tea on any train/railway station. He also asked Railway Board to provide the name of the train/railway station with relevant documents where Shri Narendra Modi sold tea. The Railway Board has said in the RTI reply that no such information is available in TG III Branch of Tourism and Catering Directorate of Railway Board. 

Commenting on the issue Mr. Tehseen Poonawalla said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's own  Railway Ministry has denied that they have any information about Modi ji selling tea on any platform or on any train. In the past, commentators like Aakar Patel have also suggested that Modi's claim of being a chaiwala may be a stretch. This document convincingly proves the same." 

Mr. Tehseen Poonawalla  further said that " I closely followed Modi ji even before he became the Prime Minister and often sported him wearing expensive glares, watches and even pocket squares. Now we know as PM he wore  a suit that was very costly and often the PM is spotted in very expensive designer outfits. Hence my curiosity about his past. Make no mistake in a democracy a common man rising to become PM is something all of us should be proud of but if Mr. Modi was selling tea at railway station or on trains, then the Railway Board will certainly have such information."  

He further asked that "how it is possible that the Railway Ministry and Railway Board, which is working under Shree Modi's Government, has no information regarding Prime minister biggest claim that Modi ji was selling tea in childhood, which was his main election plank.‎"

31 infants die in four days at govt-run Kolkata hospital

At least 31 infants are reported to have died at a government-run children's hospital in Kolkata in the last four days.

While angry parents blame hospital authorities for mismanagement and negligence, doctors at the BC Roy Post-Graduate Institute of Paediatric Sciences, premier children's hospitals in the state, say most of the infants who died were admitted here in extremely critical condition.

"They are giving wrong treatment. Nurses are not listening to us. That is why the children are being affected," a worried parent said.

But Dr Trideb Banerjee, chairman of the Health Department's Special Task Force that probes infant deaths and other such issues at hospitals across the state, has rejected the allegations of medical negligence. "BC Roy is a referral hospital; many patients are admitted here in critical state. Doctors always try their best but sometimes patients cannot be saved as their condition is very bad. There is not a single case of negligence," he said.

The Special Task Force for Health was formed in 2011, after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who doubles up as the Health Minister of the state, faced criticism over increasing number of infant deaths at several government-run hospitals across the state.

In October 2011, 18 infant deaths in 48 hours at the BC Roy hospital had provoked angry demonstrations by parents and had led to a visit by the Chief Minister.

An inquiry conducted on the orders of the government had then absolved the hospital of medical negligence, and had asked for new facilities to be added immediately. Crores were spent on setting up a 30 bed neo-natal care unit after the report.

Blaming the state government for the deaths, D Raja of the CPI said today, "It is a fact that children our dying and it is shameful that we are not being able to save our children. Somebody should take the responsibility."

Zubin Mehta's concert: heavy security in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah slams separatists' call for bandh

With just hours left for India-born conductor Zubin Mehta's highly anticipated concert in Srinagar's Shalimar Bagh, there is heavy security in the city. Called Ehsaas-e-Kashmir, the event, a first of its kind in Kashmir, is being organised by German ambassador to India Michael Steiner.

Hundreds of police and military personnel are patrolling the streets of Srinagar, with sharp shooters being deployed at strategic locations in the city. Only those carrying special passes will be allowed entry into the concert, expected to be attended by a 1,500-strong exclusive audience, including government ministers and diplomats.

The concert has already hit a controversial note with Kashmiri separatists calling it an attempt to digress from the human rights violations in the state. The separatists have called for a total shutdown of Srinagar in protest.

77-year-old Mr Mehta reached out to the separatists yesterday, saying, "I didn't choose Kashmir, Kashmir chose me. Music is the message of peace, and music only brings peace."

Accusing the separatists of hypocrisy, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "These (separatists) people are selective... If music is against the issue of Kashmir, how come Junoon came and performed here," said Mr Abdullah. 'Junoon', a Pakistani band had performed in the city in May 2008.

Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid said the youngsters must decide upon the nature and purpose of the event after hearing Mr Mehta's music. "I pray and urge and appeal to all young people that they should pause and listen to his music, listen to what his music has to say and then make up their minds," said Mr Khurshid.

Meanwhile, a counter concert, called Haqeeqat-e-Kashmir to highlight, what its organisers say, the turmoil of the people over the last two decades, has also been granted permission by the state administration.
